Jean was an elementary teacher and taught 2nd grade at St. Joseph's School in Verona for 36 years. She enjoyed shopping, reading, trips to the beach, and especially her “sweet days”. CHARLES WILLIAM ROGERS Age 80, of Ocean City, MD, formerly of Delmont, died peacefully Monday, February 3, 2020, in Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, MD. He was born August 5, 1939, in Delmont, the son of the late Charles M. Rogers and Helen (Keenan) Rogers. Mr. Rogers was the father of Timothy Charles Rogers, Sandra Rogers Annesley (William), Michelle Rogers Bankhead (John) and James Elliott Rogers; grandfather of Nancy Annesley Cunningham (Daniel), William H. Annesley IV, John C. Bankhead and Alexander P. Bankhead. A graduate of Greensburg Salem High School, Mr. Rogers received his BS in Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and his Masters in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Early in his career, he worked for Westinghouse and then Barney Machinery in Pittsburgh for many years. Along the way he founded Olympic Railway, ORX in Altoona, which he later sold to General Electric, He was an avid golfer and member of Oakmont Country Club. He was also a skier and became a ski instructor at Laurel Mountain and Seven Springs Resort on the weekends. His love of the ocean took him to Ocean City, MD, in retirement, he got his captain's license from the Merchant Marines in Annapolis, MD. During his retirement he found his second calling and was hired to take boats/yachts up and down the East coast delivering them to their summer/winter destinations. His favorite was a charter through the Panama Canal. Mr. Rogers was a 32nd degree member of the Freemasons. She was born to parents, Joseph and Roberta (nee Arthur) Graeser on November 11, 1938 in Pittsburgh, PA. Joan was a graduate of Stowe Township High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Harrisville, PA. She was actively involved in the Pro-Life Movement and served as a volunteer for multiple pregnancy care centers. She also worked as an administrative assistant for several organizations throughout her life. She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Charlie; loving children, Paul (Lissa) and John (Paula); cherished grandchildren, Deborah, Stephen, Benjamin, Daniel, Gilbert, Joe, Gideon, Andrew, Alex, Justin and Max; dear siblings, Roberta Gibson (Ralph) and Joseph Graeser (Barbara). SALLY DOERSCHUK KETCHUM Sally Doerschuk Ketchum, 93, died peacefully and courageously on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at her home in Asbury Villas, Mt. Lebanon. She was born on September 26, 1926 in Massena, NY to Ethel Timmerman Doerschuk and Victor Cappel Doerschuk. After moving to Pittsburgh Sally attended Linden School, Winchester Thurston (1943) and Wells College (1947) in Aurora, NY. Upon graduation Sally taught at Winchester Thurston from 1947 to 1950. On January 14, 1950 she married her true love, David S. Ketchum (d. 2015). They raised two daughters, Louise Ketchum of Pittsburgh and Laura Ketchum of Davidsonville, MD. Sally is also survived by four loving grandchildren, Eliza, Melissa, Graham and Ellery, four dear nieces and nephews, and friends of all ages. Sally was an exemplary woman and served the Pittsburgh community in many capacities. In addition to being a docent at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for many years, she was the first president of Phipps Friends and a member of the first and subsequent Boards of Directors. Sally was also deeply involved at various times in the Children's Home of Pittsburgh, the Jane Holmes Residence, the Winchester Thurston Alumnae Association, and the National Society of Arts and Letters. In her spare time Sally loved gardening, playing tennis, doing needlepoint and bookbinding. She was thorough, precise, attentive and enormously kind. Her gratitude and good nature prevailed until the very end. A remembrance for Sally will be held in the spring. DOUGLAS J. GRIEB In loving memory of Douglas J. Grieb. October 4, 1927 ~ February 5, 2020. Age 92, of 324 School Street, West Mifflin, PA passed Wednesday, February 5, 2020, surrounded by family. Doug was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Glenda R. Grieb. He enjoyed all of his seven children, 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grands. Doug was employed by Union Carbide, Linde Division retiring in 1992. Doug was a Veteran of the US Army; after five years he was discharged on July 24, 1952. Born on October 4, 1927, Doug was the son of the late Gertrude (Shipe) and William Grieb. He is survived by children, Joyce Fennell, Denise Knox, Douglas Grieb, Sandi Strom, Linda Grieb, David Grieb and Glenn Grieb. Also brother and sister, Ken Grieb and Elsie Ruffing. He was predeceased by brothers and sisters, William Grieb, August Grieb, Joseph Grieb, Relda Stempien, and Barbara Grieb; and grandson, Nicolas Checque. Paul was a devout Christian, a talented artist, and he loved his family, baseball, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was also a pitcher for the Edinboro University baseball team from 1990-1994. KIMBALL NEDVED On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, age 91, Kimball Nedved passed away. Formerly from Mt. Lebanon, he was living in Cumberland, Maryland at the time of his death. Kimball was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Diane Dahlberg Nedved. He was also preceded by his chess buddy and brother-in-law Roy Berg and sister-law, Dorothy Berg (the ones that introduced him to his future wife), nephew Eric Berg, and brother-in-law Philip Dahlberg. Kimball was father to Rudolph Nedved of Pittsburgh, David (Kelly) Nedved of Cumberland, MD, Evelyn (Jeffrey) Pendleton of Lancaster. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Danielle and Aidan Gelston, Marissa (Corder) Nedved Phillips, Bradley Nedved and James, Scott, and Diana Pendleton, and his great-grandson Samuel Nedved Phillips. Mr. Nedved was an analytical genius. For starters, both his parents were architects. Kimball graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a B.S. in 1952 and an M.S. in 1953. Both degrees were in psychology. He was later drafted in the Army in 1953. At Fort Benning, thanks to his stunning accuracy, he made the rifle team, the precursor to the elite Marksmanship Unit. There, he also did psychological testing of thousands of paratroopers training at the Airborne School's “Free Towers.” After his service, he worked in advertising at Leo Burnett, one of the world's largest agencies. His market research career started first with Market Facts. He then took employment with Johnson Wax, where he helped develop Glade. Next, he worked for Campbell Soup and then Heinz Ketchup. Eventually, he and John Hayes founded a company that provided “useful” market research for 30 years to most supermarket chains and large retailers in North America. The answers had to explain retail success or the questions weren't asked. Kimball also had a knack for chess. He won the 1951 Illinois State Chess Championship and the 1969 US Amateur Chess Championship. His four-person team won the 1986 US Amateur Team Championship. In 1987, his chess rating was 2321, compared to a Grandmaster rating of 2400. In 1988, when Carnegie-Mellon University was developing Deep Thought, they tested it by having the chess program compete against Kimball. Kimball also loved history, especially studying the strategies used in the US Civil War. He greatly enjoyed visiting historical sites and national parks with his family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 29th at 2 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills (1240 Washington Road). JOHN HARTWELL HILLMAN IV "HART" Unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, age 65, formerly of Edgewood. Beloved father of John H. Hillman, V (Ashley Close), Hannah E. Hillman, and Sarah M. Hart worked as an investment banker before enjoying a second career as a criminal defense attorney. He worked at the Allegheny County Public Defender's office before going into private practice. Hart was known to be rather eccentric, a lover of people, a profound collector, and he enjoyed a good project. He liked to regale his friends and family by telling incredible and hilarious stories. MARY LOUISE BLACK Mary Louise “Lou” Black (nee Moore) passed away Friday, February 7th in her home in Wexford, PA. Mary Lou was born May 1, 1941 in Pittsburgh, PA to John and Clara Marie Moore (nee Donahoe). She was raised in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, attending St. Bernard's Elementary, and Dormont High School class of 1959. After earning a degree in Fine Arts and Business from Slippery Rock University, Mary Lou enjoyed a career as an executive assistant at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, a division manager for Sears, and a district representative for the Mattel toy company. After raising her family, Mary Lou developed a successful career as a real estate agent, broker and appraiser in the Wexford and Cranberry Township area. Mary Lou had a kind and generous heart, especially when it came to animals, providing a warm and caring home to many strays over the years. Mary Lou's number one love was always her family. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Paul Black; a son Matthew (Tiffany) of Natrona Heights, PA; a daughter Stephanie Hayes (Jon) of Cape Girardeau, MO; and three grandchildren, Caleb, Emma, and Henry. She is also survived by two sisters, Pat Huecker and Karyn Moore; and one brother, Thomas Moore; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary Lou will be remembered by her family and friends as a wonderful person who provided them much love and support throughout the years. She will be deeply missed. Family will welcome friends on Tuesday and Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at SCHELLHAAS & SONS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 1600 Stone Mansion Drive, Sewickley, PA 15143 (Franklin Park/Wexford). HARRY MICHAEL CLEMENTS M.D. Harry Michael Clements, M.D. passed away peacefully on February 6, 2020 after a long illness. He was born on April 14, 1943 to Dr. Harry and Genevieve Clements. As a young man “Mickey” was an accomplished athlete and great scholar. He pitched in the Little League World Series in 1955 for the Sto-Ken Rox Baseball Team. He attended Stowe High School where he earned varsity letters in baseball and basketball and was Valedictorian of the Class of 1959. He graduated with honors from Dartmouth College and followed his father to the prestigious Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, graduating in 1966. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was honorably discharged after serving at the Veterans Hospital in New Orleans and as a Naval Surgeon on the USS Staten Island, an ice-cutter forging a path to open the northwest passage for global trade. The voyage was designated as “Operation Deep Freeze”. After returning home from active duty, he served as a physician at Weirton Steel Corporation before returning to McKees Rocks to open a medical practice. He served patients faithfully in Stowe, McKees Rocks and the surrounding areas for many decades. In the later years, he had a medical practice in Brookline and he served patients in the Brookline neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He retired in 2017. He was known as a brilliant diagnostician, a patient teacher, and a kind soul. He had an insatiable intellectual curiosity, spoke Italian, loved the arts, particularly opera, and was a skilled artist in marquetry, the art of in-laid wood, even inventing a new technique to enable more detailed pictures. He is preceded in death by his loving parents, and his baby sister, Alice. He is survived by his siblings Dave (MaryAnn Gleason), Frank, Barbara, Tom (Kathe) and Christine Albertini (Peter); nieces and nephews Ronna, Scott and David, Kathleen and Kristopher, Masha and Alex, Zhanna and Louis, Stevie and Tommy and many great-nieces and nephews. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Bernard Church in Mt. Lebanon, PA on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. EVERYBODY PLEASE MEET IN CHURCH ON THURSDAY. Friends will be received at ANTHONY M. MUSMANNO FUNERAL HOME in Kennedy Township, 941 McCoy Rd, McKees Rocks, PA 15136, on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Dartmouth College in Michael's name is suggested.
