DR. CHARLES R. WILSON, JR. MD, FACP January 22, 1930 – April 17, 2020. Of Oakmont, died peacefully at home on Friday, April 17th at the age of 90. “Reg”, the son of Charles Reginald “Reggie” Wilson, Sr. and Josephine Harrison Wilson is survived by his wife of 65 years, Geraldine “Gerry” Corba Wilson; his sister, Jacquelyn Wilson Hill of Oakmont; his children, Charles R. “Reg” III (Lorna), Karen Wilson Connor, and Gary (Sherri); seven grandchildren: Katie (Liam) McDevitt, Carey (Patrick) Wilson, Michael (Gretchen) Connor, Michelle (Ben) Hogue, Brianna Wilson, Coleman Wilson and Shannon Wilson, who predeceased him. Great grandfather to Ross and Drew McDevitt and Hadley and Phoebe Wilson. Reg was born in Pittsburgh's Mercy Hospital in 1930 and raised in downtown Pittsburgh as his father was the manager of first, The Roosevelt Hotel and then The William Penn Hotel. In 1937, Reg was afflicted with polio, a paralyzing disease that had no cure at the time. He was expected to die at age 7, having been given last rites (prayers given by a Catholic priest at the end of life) but miraculously recovered to live a full and healthy life. His recovery became a part of Dr. Jonas Salk's research prior to Dr. Salk discovering a cure for polio in 1955 at the University of Pittsburgh, coincidentally the year that Reg graduated from Pitt's medical school. After graduation from Mount Lebanon High School, Reg attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, then the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. His internal medicine residency was at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital. After his residency, Reg became an officer in the U.S. Navy, serving in Long Beach, California from 1957-1959. While in the Navy, he was trained to be a deep-sea diving physician, to attend to the medical needs of his fellow sailors who were perfecting the submarine-launched, nuclear warhead carrying Polaris Missile, which first launched a year after his discharge. Returning to Pittsburgh, Reg was an attending physician at West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield where he spent his entire career. In addition to his private practice, he was a member of the teaching faculty since 1961, and served as Chair of the Department of Medicine from 1969 - 1985. Among the many achievements throughout his career, he was particularly proud to be awarded the hospital's Gold Headed Cane Award in 1983, which is the highest honor bestowed on a member of the medical faculty exemplifying the best qualities of physician, teacher, and researcher. Socially, Reg enjoyed golf and tennis, but had a particular love of writing and chronicling medical and family history. He served as a member of the editorial staff at the Allegheny County Medical Society and compiled volumes of family history spanning over 150 years. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of The West Penn Hospital Foundation, Reg served on the board of Longue Vue Club and as a Trustee of the Shadyside Academy. MARK GERARDI Age 58, of Centerville, Ohio, passed away peacefully after a hard fought battle with multiple myeloma with his family by his side. Mark was born on June 7, 1961, in Pittsburgh, PA and was a graduate of South Hills Catholic, class of '79. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Madeline Gerardi. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; sons, Matthew (Chelsea) of Cleveland and Michael of Atlanta; his brother, Paul (Eva) and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. BERTHA HELEN "HONEY" DAUBE Age 84, of Scott Township, PA, on Monday, April 13, 2020. Beloved daughter of the late Maurice Daube and Helen (Brosky) Daube. Cherished sister of Therese (Daube) Condit; treasured aunt of Amy Ellen Condit; Honey is also survived by many cousins who will dearly miss her. Honey received a B.S. degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, an M.Ed. from The Pennsylvania State University, received the Reading Specialist certificate from Duquesne University, where she had further advanced studies. Honey was proud to serve as Remedial Reading Specialist, at the elementary level, for 43 years in the Chartiers Valley School District. Among her many travel experiences, following retirement, included trips to Kaneohe, Oahu, where she lived for extended periods with Uncle George Brosky. They celebrated their birthdays together with trips through China. Community involvement was very important to Honey. Honey was a lifelong member of the College Club of Carnegie, serving as President three times. Since it's inception, Honey served on Committees of the Pink Pamper Inc., a fundraising group for women with cancer. Honey was also active in the South Park Women's Club, Bethel Woman's Club, the Hilltoppers and Delta Zeta Sorority. Honey was a lifelong member of S.S. Simon & Jude Parish. A devout Christian. MARLENE WAY OTTERMAN Formerly of Edgewood, on Friday, April 10, 2020. Marlene was born December 26, 1941, one of four daughters in Ben and Ethel Otterman's family. Marlene enjoyed traveling to many countries with her family and Rotary. She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1960. She went on to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh and attained two Master's Degrees. Marlene was a Social Studies Teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools as well as a librarian and talented storyteller. Marlene was a member of South Avenue United Methodist Church and she enjoyed being a Bible Study Leader at Shady Park Place. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. JOHN "JACK" FRANCIS KRAUS May 4, 1922 - April 15, 2020 John "Jack" Francis Kraus, 97, of Huntsville, Alabama, formerly of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, died peacefully on April 15, 2020, with his wife and daughters at his side. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dolores (Dolly) Fee Kraus; his daughters, Patricia Putnak, Kathy Straub (James) and Kimberly Kotheimer (David). Jack was a beloved “Pop Pop” to 6 grandchildren, James Putnak, Kimberly Straub, Michael Straub (Lindsey), Jamie Straub, Patrick Straub and John Kotheimer; as well as one great-granddaughter, Sloane Straub. He will be remembered with great affection (as Uncle Fritz) by his many nephews and nieces. Jack was born in Pittsburgh on May 4, 1922, a son of the late Joseph Benedict Kraus and Mary Josephine Kelleher Kraus. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Irma Merecky (Sigmund), Joseph (Helen), Raymond (Helen), Larry (Loretta), Rita Wilson (Robert), Helen McMeekin (Bill), William (Ruth), Charles, and Lois. Jack was a WWII veteran, having landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy at age 20. He fought in many of the major campaigns in the European Theater, including in Normandy and northern France, the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhineland. He had field promotions to Staff Sergeant, was awarded the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, and later decorated with the Legion of Honor, France's highest order of merit. Jack attended The University of Pittsburgh and graduated as a Chemical Engineer. He married Dolly on October 31, 1953. He started his own engineering firm, John F. Kraus & Co. After many successful years, he sold the company to his employees and retired to Florida; he eventually settled in Huntsville, Alabama to be closer to family. Jack was an avid golfer and enjoyed many rounds with friends at Chartiers Country Club. In Florida and Alabama, he continued to play well into his eighties and “shot his age” several times. Jack and Dolly had an active social life and they loved hosting and going to parties. Their anniversary was on Halloween and lively costume parties became a part of their celebration. Thanksgiving dinner will never be the same without Pop Pop's stuffing on the table. A diehard Steelers fan, Jack braved many snowstorms to see a game at Three Rivers Stadium, where he held season tickets for more than twenty years. Jack was a great story teller who enjoyed his own stories so much that he would often be overcome with laughter. Jack often credited his health and long life to a nightly Manhattan. He loved crossword puzzles, which he completed in pen, and nothing pleased him more than a challenging jigsaw puzzle. Family was most important to Jack and he adored his daughters and grandchildren. He loved babies the most and had a talent for soothing the fussiest infant with his quiet singing and walking. Pop Pop could always be counted on to take the grandkids to McDonald's and he happily dozed through endless Star Wars movies. He was thrilled by visits from his great-granddaughter, Sloane. DONALD F. "BIG GUY" CASSIDY Of Wilkins Twp., age 88, on Saturday, April 18, 2020. Beloved husband for 36 years of the late Mary Therese (Reig) Cassidy who died in 1994. Loving father of James (Lynn) Cassidy of Forest Hills, Kathleen Cassidy of Swissvale, Michele (Donald) Sand of Stanton Hts., Mary Christina Cassidy, and Regina (Ed Polliard) Cassidy of Wilkins Twp. FATHER VERNON BUSCH, OFM CAP. Father Vernon Busch, OFM Cap., died suddenly at about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2020, just outside the chapel of St. Augustine Friary in Pittsburgh, PA. He was 85 years old, having been a Capuchin Franciscan friar for nearly 65 years and a priest for almost 60 years. Father Vernon was a much respected man among his Capuchin brothers who elected him three times to serve as a member of the Provincial Council. His intelligence, wisdom and well-grounded good sense were highly valued. His straightforward manner could be disarming, but his sense of humor was never far below the surface. These traits in particularly made him a trusted friend and counselor to young and old alike. Born Robert on October 16, 1934, he was preceded in death by his father, Andrew (+1982); his mother, Josephine (Froehlich, +1994); and his brother, Charles (+2016). He is survived by two sisters, Joan (Moineau) and Mildred (Thurber), both of Lower Burrell, PA. A nephew, Fr. John Moineau, is a priest of the Greensburg diocese. Following his parochial elementary school education, young Robert attended St. Fidelis High School and College in Herman, PA, receiving the name “Vernon” upon entering the Capuchin Novitiate in 1954. He made his religious profession of vows on July 14, 1955. Upon completion of his undergraduate studies in 1957, Father Vernon began his theological seminary training at Capuchin College in Washington, DC and was ordained a priest on June 6, 1960. He spent his first seventeen years of ministry in education, teaching at St. Fidelis College and High School and also serving as Prefect of Discipline and Dean of Students. He continued his own education as well, earning an M.A. in classical languages from Duquesne University in 1966. During these years he also served briefly as a chaplain for the Veteran's Hospital in Butler, PA and was for three years the pastor at St. Joseph Parish in North Oakland. Father Vernon left education ministry late in 1979, serving briefly as pastor of St. Alphonsus parish in Wheeling, WV before returning to the Pittsburgh area upon his election to Provincial Administration. He was also assigned as Guardian (local superior) of the friars' community of St. Augustine in Lawrenceville. In 1983, he was asked to be part of the team of friars that opened the newly re-established St. Conrad friary in Allison Park as the Provincial Novitiate. He would spend the next thirteen years of his life there as a Chaplain to the Kane Regional Center ministering to the elderly and infirm and as confidant and confessor to the young men discerning their vocation as Capuchin friars. Father Vernon returned to parish ministry in 1996, moving to Cumberland, MD, where he served Ss. Peter and Paul parish until 2004, when health concerns overtook him and brought him back to St. Augustine friary in Lawrenceville. The last fifteen years of Father Vernon's life were spent battling severe health problems. These were years of suffering for him, borne with determination, humility and faith. He did not feign toughness; he was resolute and honest about the challenges he faced and surrendered himself to a continuous ministry of prayer, entrusting himself and others, especially the sick and suffering, to God's providence. To the end he was fully present to others; he always enjoyed good conversation and good company. His funeral arrangements will remain private due to the current pandemic scourge. The Capuchin friars of St. Augustine Friary will receive his body on Monday evening, April 20, 2020, and will keep vigil for him there. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 Tuesday morning in the friary's St. Margaret of Cortona chapel. Interment will be held privately at St. Augustine cemetery. JEROME SALERNO Age 89, of Scott Township, passed away April 18, 2020, at St. Clair Hospital. Born May 17, 1930, in Glendale, he was the son of the late Frank and Maria Salerno. Jerome was a graduate of Scott Township, 1947 and Robert Morris College (Accounting), 1957. Jerome was the Treasurer of Russell Industries for over 30 years and the former co-owner, with his nephew, Frank Romano, of Blanc Printing, Bridgeville. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was an avid tennis, ping pong and bocce player. He had a lifelong love of learning. His interests included yoga, philosophy, acupressure and essential oils. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Rosemarie Salerno; brother, Thomas; and sisters, Mary Novelli, Agnes Romano and Katherine Giocondi. Jerome is survived by his daughters, Becky Carson, of Castle Shannon and Theresa (David) Elkin, of Cranberry Twp.; granddaughters, Nicole Costello, Michelle Costello, Katie (Chad) Stanley and Julie Elkin; and great-granddaughter, Victoria Eames. He is also survived by his companion of 20 years, Joan Yoho; and his brother Joseph Salerno. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, services and interment are private. SALLY A. STONE Age 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, April 19, 2020. Beloved wife of the late Robert Rade Stone; dear mother of Robert (Maria) Stone, Jr. and Rada (Patrick) O'Shea; loving grandmother "Baba" of Sydney, Madison, Mila, Danica, Milan, and Desa; beloved sister of Louisa Ratay, Conte DeLoyo, Coni Betz, and the late Ted (Jenny) Kukich; also many loving nieces, nephews, and kumovi. EILEEN D. McCREA Age 91, of the South Side, formerly of Oakland, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2020. Born on the South Side, Eileen moved to Oakland after her marriage and resided there for 30 years. Early on, raising her family was her priority. She volunteered with the Christian Mothers Organization as a member of St. Regis Church. She was a member of the Slovak Catholic Sokols and volunteered in the Cub Scouts. Her home was always full of love, family, fun, food and of course the shout of "NEXT" as she and her playing partner would run the table in a game of “66”. The next phase of her life began as a School Crossing Guard for the City of Pittsburgh and then as a clerk with the Bureau of Building Inspection where she devoted 25 years in service to the city. During this time, she moved back to the South Side becoming a member of St. Peter Church in the Prince of Peace Parish where she was a sacristan. Eileen loved to travel in the US and abroad, including to Jamaica, Medjugorje, Bosnia, and Machu Picchu, Peru. She was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, loved the CLO and Broadway Series, and never missed a play or concert if one of her grandchildren, or great-grandchildren were preforming. After retiring, she volunteered with the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council at the Brasher Center, and with the Emmaus Community where she eventually worked as the assistant to the Chief Finance Officer for 22 years. Eileen was the heart and soul of every holiday, lovingly planning, cooking and serving her family of over 30. She will be dearly missed by those whom her heart has touched. Eileen was the daughter of the late William and Anna Schild and the wife of the late Charles. Beloved mother of Chick (Diane), Bill (Sue), Jim (Renee), Ruth (Mickey) Casey and Beth (Ray) Taylor. Beloved grandmother of Nikki McCrea (Skip Bernard), Chuck (Christina) McCrea, Barbara Ann (Paul) Bowser, Michael (Shauna) Casey, Jackie (Donnie) Renk, Elizabeth Casey, Brian Taylor, and Aaron (Joy) Taylor. Also survived by 13 great-grandchildren. Sister of Carol Ann (the late Tom) Wallace, the late Henry Schild, and beloved “Gran” to Mary Ann Wallace. Sister-in-law of Pam (the late Jim) McCrea and the late Geraldine McCrea Bakey, and survived by several nephews, nieces and cousins. Visitation and interment private due to COVID-19 restrictions. CYNTHIA JOHANNA FIDAGO Peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2020, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Cynthia J. Fidago, daughter of Irene C. Fidago and the late Joseph L. Fidago, sister of Joseph J. (Marylee). Beloved aunt of Joseph L., Michael W. and Emily C. Fidago. They were "the three pieces of her heart." Also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and cherished friends. Until her retirement in 2010, Cindi was an Administrative Support Tech at the Bureau of Mine Safety and Health Administration. She loved her "little church," St. Francis of Assisi in Finleyville, and enjoyed a couple of years after her retirement volunteering with the Ladies of Charity of which she was a proud member. Our deepest thanks and love go out to the many family members and friends for their love and support. If you wrote a card, sent a text, bought groceries or took her to doctor's appointments we are deeply grateful. Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will be no visitation or service at this time. A Memorial Mass and celebration of her life will be planned at a later date. "Cookie" Cook, Sr.; loving mother of Joanne Cook, Maureen (Jim) Smith, Charles (Linda) Cook, Jr., Deborah (John) Balkovec, David (Karen) Cook, Diane Cook and the late Keith Cook; devoted grandmother of Jason (Robin) Cook, Christine Cook, Jenna Cook (Matt), Megan Cook (Ryan), Nicholas Balkovec and Angel, her fur-baby girl; great-grandmother of Caitlin, Cameran and Aleksah; daughter of the late Ann and Nicholas Reiland; sister of the late Lois (the late Howard "Sparkie") Lewis; sister-in-law of Albert Cook, the late Jimmy Cook and Ivy Scruggs. COLUMBIA (CONNIE) MANCINI HANLON Age 99, of Kennedy Township, PA, died Friday, April 17, 2020, at Asbury Heights, Mt. Lebanon, PA. Connie was born December 20, 1920, in Barisciano, Italy. She was the daughter of the late Eugenio Mancini and Rosetta (DiNardo) Mancini. At age 6 years, Connie and her mother, Rosetta, immigrated to the United States following Eugenio who had come previously to establish a business and home in Bentleyville, PA. Connie graduated Bentleyville High School in 1939. During and after high school Connie worked at her parents' small grocery store in Bentleyville. Eventually Connie moved to Coraopolis where she worked as a waitress and then as an Operator for the telephone company. Connie met her late husband, Robert Whitmer Hanlon, in Coraopolis. Connie, Robert and sons settled in Kennedy Township and were members of St. Malachy Catholic Church, since its inception. Connie devoted her life to the vocations of marriage, family and friendship. To her sons and family she was the ultimate caregiver, cook, guide and support. These qualities became hallmark characteristics of Connie to all who knew her. Connie worked for the good of the church and community almost tirelessly. For decades Connie volunteered in all aspects of parish life, but she was most invested in the Ladies Guild, Christian Mothers, Nationality Festival and Bereavement Services. Connie was perhaps best know for the many years she provided leadership and organization to the Italian booth for the annual St. Malachy Nationality Festival. Into her 90s, Connie continued to support church activities as much as she was able. Connie carried on her deceased husband's lifelong support of children's special needs, especially St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, that occupied much of her compassion and empathy in recent years. At Asbury Heights, where Connie lived with compromises, she somehow showed even more abundant grace and compassion for her fellow residents and the staff. Preceding Connie in death were her husband, Robert Whitmer Hanlon, who died June 9, 2001; sister, Olga (Mancini) Cuteri, who died August 10, 2000; stepson, Charles Reed Hanlon, who died April 16, 1998; stepdaughter, Martha Kidney who died October 15, 2010. Surviving are her three sons: Dr. Eugene B. Hanlon of Boston, MA; Raymond B. Hanlon and his wife, Donna, of Portersville, PA; J. Barry Hanlon of Houston, TX; three grandchildren: Dr. Aaron R. Hanlon and his partner, April Le, of Waterville, ME, Sean R. Hanlon of Pittsburgh, PA, and R. Dylan Hanlon and spouse, Geah Miller, of Boston, MA and their daughter Josephine, great-grandchild to Connie; sister, Dolcie (Mancini) DeNardo, of Detroit, MI; stepson. Robert W. Hanlon, Jr. and wife Gloria, of Southaven, MS; daughter-in-law, Shirley Hanlon, of Southbridge, MA, wife of the late Charles Reed Hanlon; step-grandchildren: Lisa McGregor of Blytheville, AR, Jessica Davish, of Horn Lake, MS, Kathy Poirier of Clemson, SC, Karen Kidney (deceased), Daniel Kidney (deceased); step-great-grandchildren: John McGregor, Elizabeth McGregor, Janice McGregor, Christian Wallace, Victoria Davish, Meg Poirier, and Faye Poirier. PAUL D. GAVIGLIA Age 84, of Export, died Monday, April 20, 2020, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 27, 1936, in Pittsburgh's North Side, a son of the late Francis and Eleanor (Torquato) Gaviglia. Paul was a retired over the road driver for UPS. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always put his family first. Surviving are his beloved wife, Carol (Lapiana) Gaviglia; loving children, Natalie (Robert) Wiltsie of FL, David (Karen) Gaviglia of Cranberry Twp., and Michael Gaviglia of FL; cherished grandchildren, Michael and Ethan Marhefky and Steven, Craig, Jacob Gaviglia and his treasured great granddaughter Megan Marhefky.
