PRICE ELLEN WALDO A life well lived at age 92 in the company of her oldest son, Richard Gibson and his wife, Jolynn. She is also survived by her son, Christopher Gibson and his wife, Lynne of West Haven, CT; and her sisters, Laura May, Dorothy, Mary, Betty and Barbie. Ellen loved everybody and was special to all who new her. She was raised on a Dairy farm in southern Wisconsin where school ended at the 8th grade. Never one to be satisfied with the status quo she took a position as an upstairs maid in a Chicago mansion in order to finish high school. After a Rosie the Riveter stint in an airplane factory she went on to receive her teaching degree at the University of Wisconsin where she lived in an interracial student co-op. She later finished an MA in early childhood education at Penn State. She loved teaching and her students loved her. Her career at East Allegheny elementary spanned some 25 years and many lives were enriched by her special touch. Ellen was a patron of the arts and loved the Carnegie museum of Pittsburgh where she was a volunteer for 20 years. Throughout her life she was an advocate for the advancement of women's roles in society and was a role model and counselor for many of her younger friends and extended family. A true feminist before they invented the word, she was also a enthusiastic proponent of natural childbirth and would often say "Its one of life's most beautiful experiences and I wanted to be there to enjoy it. It didn't hurt a bit. I just concentrated on my big toe and thought pleasant thoughts" Classic Ellen. She always said, though, her greatest joy and achievement was raising her two sons, Richard and Chris. A service will be held Saturday, January 9, 2015, at 2 p.m. First Baptist Church, 159 N. Bellefield Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Donations in her honor will be accepted by First Baptist. Arrangements by BALL FUNERAL CHAPEL, INC. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
