CERNY Sr. AURELIA (MARY), O.S.F. Sister M. Aurelia, 81, a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis, United States Province, in her 62nd year of Profession, died on Friday, February 12, 2016, in St. Clare Hospital, Denville, NJ. Sister entered the community from Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish, Clifton, NJ in 1953, and professed her first vows in 1954, at Mount Assisi Convent Chapel in Pittsburgh, PA. She attended classes at Mount Mercy College (Carlow University) and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA where she earned a B.S. in General Science for secondary school. At Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ she received a Master of Arts majoring in administration and minoring in secondary education. During her years of ministry, Sister Aurelia taught the primary and middle grades in Canonsburg, Clymer, Bethlehem, Emmaus and Northampton in Pennsylvania and in Clifton, New Jersey. From 1971 to 2011, she served as principal in West Lawn and Emmaus in Pennsylvania and in schools in New Milford, Closter, Demarest and Denville, New Jersey. She spent the last few years volunteering and caring for her family members. Sister Aurelia was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Julia (Balaga) Cerny; and her brother, Francis. She is survived by her religious community; her sister, Margaret Skladany; and her nephews. Calling hours are from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016, and on Friday, February 19, 2016, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Monocacy Manor, Bethlehem, PA. BROWN Sr. ELIZABETH (SR. REGIS MARIE), CSJ Sister Elizabeth Brown (Sister Regis Marie), CSJ, 79, died Tuesday, February 16, 2016, in the 62nd year of her religious life as a Sister of St. Joseph. The daughter of Regis and Marie Hauck Brown, Sister Elizabeth entered the Congregation from Holy Rosary Parish, Pittsburgh, PA. For nearly 30 years, she ministered as an elementary and high school teacher in Pittsburgh and Greensburg diocesan schools including St. Veronica High School in Ambridge, St. Joseph High School in Natrona, Mount Gallitzin Academy in Baden and Good Samaritan in Ambridge where she also served as Vice Principal. From 1977-1996, Sister Elizabeth, with her excellent mathematical skills, gracefully balanced dual roles as Treasurer for the Sisters of St. Joseph and part-time teacher at Mount Gallitzin Academy. For nearly a decade, she most recently served as Coordinator of Sisters' Benefits. Described as an outstanding and fair teacher, Sister Elizabeth challenged students to develop their thinking skills and their best gifts. She often volunteered to tutor Girls Hope scholars. An accomplished seamstress, Sister Elizabeth sewed hundreds of habits for novices in the 1950s and recently sewed, from memory, an authentic full habit, which was donated to the Cambria County Historical Society. She also loved to draw and occasionally complemented Sisters' poetry with her artwork. Characterized by her patience, kindness and compassion, Sister Elizabeth was always open to the concerns of the dear neighbors and all of Creation. Sister Elizabeth is survived by one brother, James Brown and his wife, Cynthia, of Pittsburgh; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. Friends will be received Thursday, February 18, 2016, from 1- 8 p.m. and Friday, February 19, 2016, from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph. GOLDEN SAMUEL HENRY III Age 95, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia of New York City and Pamela (Bruce Kestner) of Shadyside; sister-in-law, Shirley Golden; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel Howard and Samuel Henry Golden II; beloved wife, Pagie Patricia Leftwich; son, Dr. Samuel W. Golden IV; brother, Robert; and sister, Ruth (Bob Cooley). Born February 17, 1920, Sam's life was filled with reading, classical music, duplicate bridge and travel and was rich with thought and discussion. Although Sam began his professional career as a pharmacist, he most valued his years as a teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Sam taught science, first at Herron Hill Junior High School (now Milliones), then at Westinghouse High School, where he headed the Science Department until his retirement in 1981. He took great joy in seeing his former students and hearing about their lives and successes. Sam was a Staff Sergeant in the Army from 1943 until 1946, and was in charge of a medical laboratory for Station Hospital in Burma. He also spent many years as a practicing pharmacist, retiring in 1980, from Thrift Drug Company. Sam was proud of the centuries-long legacy of the Golden family, which traces its American heritage back to the 1790s and the relationship between Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. In the 19th century Sam's ancestor, Lewis F. Woodson, was a nationally known abolitionist and author who lived in Pittsburgh. The family also includes the first African-American member of the Pittsburgh stock exchange and the president of the Western Pennsylvania Historical Society. A celebration of Sam Golden's life will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Pittsburgh Promise, a nonprofit that provides financial aid to college-bound Pittsburgh Public School graduates, pittsburghpromise.org, 1901 Centre Ave., Suite 204, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
