OCHNER EDWARD M. “GUS” Age 88, of Aspinwall, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Julia (Bristol) Ochner; loving father of the late Sheila Bristol Ochner; brother of the late Raymond F. Ochner, Jr.; friend of Darlene Sims. Gus was a graduate of St. Scholastica School and Aspinwall High School. He attended State Teachers Colleges in California and Pennsylvania and was a graduate of the University of California-Berkeley. He was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Air Force. He was employed by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph, and retired from the Veterans Administration Engineering Services in 1996 and was a lifetime member of the Aspinwall American Legion Post 77. Friends will be received Friday, March 16, 2018, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at WEDDELL - AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Ave., Aspinwall. BACKA WILLIAM A., Sr. On Wednesday, March 14, 2018, age 90, of Swisshelm Park, formerly of Braddock and Forest Hills. He was born in Braddock on October 3, 1927. He was the husband of the late Imelda (Diskevich) Backa; loving father of William of Swisshelm Park, Alan of Moon Township, Duane of Carrick and Linda Rose of Swisshelm Park; brother of Mary Jane Scholl of Ross Township and Jack Backa and his partner, Beth of Houston, TX. Mr. Backa served in the US Army in 1945 and 1946 and then worked for US Steel Irvin Works before joining Westinghouse in East Pittsburgh, Trafford and Turtle Creek, he retired in 1985. Mr. Backa was a devout Catholic who attended Mass every week at Word of God Parish, St. Anselm Church. He loved playing sports such as baseball and basketball in his youth until he met his wife. He also loved playing golf and bowling. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Steelers, Pirates and Duquesne Dukes basketball. One of his most fond memories was attending a Pengiuns game at the former Civic Arena, with front row seats, while watching Mario Lemieux. VISITATION PRIVATE. Bob was the beloved husband and best friend of 41 years to Suzanne (Gumto) Schiffhauer; cherished and respected father of Sarah Schiffhauer of Shaler Twp. and Robert (Deanna) Schiffhauer of Economy Borough; his brother, Jack Schiffhauer of San Jose CA; his sister and best friend, Irene (John) Ramsey of Sharpsburg; a brother, William (Shirley) Schiffhauer of Mt. SZEKELY RUDOLPH “RUDY” On Thursday, March 15, 2018, “Rudy” Rudolph Szekely, 87, of Braddock went home to the Father. Rudy was born on October 23, 1930, in Braddock to the late Rudolph and Freda Ostrowski Szekely. He graduated from Braddock High School in 1949. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Florence Banyas Szekely who he married on September 11, 1952. He is the devoted father of four children, Rudolph (Marla) Szekely of Apollo, Cheryl (Jerry) Pysk of Braddock, Eric (Mary) Szekely of Pitcairn and Brian Szekely of Braddock; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Rudy is a retired rigger from United States Steel Homestead Works with 35 years of service. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Calling hours with the family will be on Sunday, March 18, from 2-8 p.m. in the SCHLEIFER FUNERAL CHAPEL, INC., (412-271-1361), 534 Jones Avenue, North Braddock. Fred was a lifelong resident of Carrick. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he worked, then owned Burger Real Estate and Insurance Agency on Brownsville Road, helping the community for over 50 years. He served on the Board of Directors at Parkvale Bank for 31 years. Fred was a lifelong member of St. Basil Parish and the Catholic Men's Association at St. Paul Monastery. TOTTEN TERRY ANN NICKERSON Age 75, of Atlanta, Georgia died on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Terry was fighting a battle with cancer and died suddenly of complications related to her treatment. She is survived by her sister, Jean Nickerson Blaske of Rutherfordton, NC; her sons, James S. Totten (Carol) of Atlanta, GA, and Patrick F. Totten of Pittsburgh, PA; and grandchildren, Owen, Ellie, Catherine, Derek, and Trevor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Totten, Jr.; and son, Charles A. Totten III. Terry was born on April 4, 1942, in Orono, Maine to her beloved parents, Leroy Stanley Nickerson and Dorothy Densleigh Foster Nickerson. After attending Fryberg Academy and Green Mountain College, Terry and her husband, Charlie, moved to Pittsburgh and then spent 14 years in Redlands, California, before returning to Pittsburgh in 1987. After a successful venture as an interior designer, Terry found her life's work as an aviation underwriter both in Pittsburgh and her final home in Atlanta, Georgia. She was known as someone that got things accomplished with unquestioned integrity. Terry was truly loved by everyone that knew her and lived her life treating other people with kindness and understanding. Terry was also widely known for her beautiful needlepoint and knitting. Despite her many projects and interests, there is no doubt that her passion was her family. Raising three boys, one with special needs, Terry always put her family ahead of herself. Her five grandchildren became her devotion in life and they will always remember Grammie for the time that she spent teaching them to knit, bake and most of all her showering them with unconditional love.
