FREDERICK WILLIAM CRITTENDEN On Friday, March 16, 2018, loving husband of Millie Sochatoff Myers; uncle of Anne Frederick and Bill Frederick (Lyn Rosen), both of Chicago; and brother-in-law of June Belkin Dietrich (Barry). Equally worthy of mention are Bill's intellectual progeny: former Ph.D. students, Rogene Buchholz, Denis Collins, Robert Hogner, Nancy Kurland, Diane Swanson, William Tiga Tita, David Wasieleski, James Weber, and Richard Wokutch. He was tremendously proud of their scholarly successes and appreciative of their loyalty to him. Bill was born in Arkansas but preferred to talk about his Virginia roots: his mother's family, the Crittendens, traced their ancestry to the Washington and Jefferson families-and could prove it! After Army service, Bill earned his B.A. and Ph.D. in economics and anthropology at the University of Texas-Austin. He taught at Tampa University, the University of Florida, and Kansas State University, where he was also dean of the business school, before coming to the University of Pittsburgh's Katz Graduate School of Business as Associate Dean, Dean, and (having gotten administration out of his system), Professor of Business Administration, focusing on corporate social responsibility, business ethics and values, and evolutionary interpretations of business behavior. His books in those fields include Natural Corporate Management: From the Big Bang to Wall Street (2012), Corporation, Be Good! The Story of Corporate Social Responsibility (2006), and Values, Nature, and Culture in the American Corporation (1995). He also co-authored multiple editions of Business and Society, a leading textbook in the field. Bill published many scholarly articles and book reviews and, in recent years, enjoyed mentoring through e-mail conversations a number of rising scholars from across the country and the globe. As a consultant to foundations and governments, he conducted studies of management education in Spain, Italy, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Australia and advised business schools in Ecuador and Nigeria. He posted his last book review in February on his website: www.williamcfrederick.com. Special thanks to Adam Fogarty, whose stalwart and kind caregiving skills (and computer skills) were invaluable to Bill and Millie in recent months. A memorial gathering will be scheduled for a future date. Contributions in Bill's honor are welcome at WQED-FM or the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
