ELLIS MARY JANE (MENK) Passed away on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018 at the age of 97. She survived her two husbands, Wayne David Carson, who was killed in action in WWII, and Edwin F. Ellis, the father of her eight children, who died in 1972. The beloved matriarch of her family is survived by her eight children, Kathy Kinzeler (Bill), Bill Ellis (Debbie), Bud Ellis (Sherry), Mary Ann Hughes (Mike), Janie Piemonte (Mike), Mary Lou Bradley (Rich), Peggy Liwosz (Dan), and Greg Ellis (Susan); 27 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Mary Jane was a graduate of Mt. Mercy College in Pittsburgh. During her lifetime, Mary Jane was a member of the Christian Mothers at SS. Simon and Jude, made hundreds of rosaries for the poor, volunteered for Meals on Wheels in Carnegie, and knitted caps for infants in the NICU and for women undergoing chemo therapy. Mary Jane loved her iPad and utilized Facebook to keep tabs on the 90+ members of her family. MILAS STEPHEN "STEVE" Age 90, of New Eagle and formerly of South Park, passed away on Aug. 19, 2018 in Jefferson Hospital. Born May 26, 1928 in Broughton, he was a son of the late Stephen and Anna (Karin) Milas; Steve was preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony, Marty (Kitty), and Michael (Eva) Milas; sisters, Mary (Leonard) Romano and Rose (Ettore) Ginestra; and in-laws, Joseph DiFrancesco, Glen and Elvira Williams, Fritz Bartolini, Andy Sakas, and Arthur DiFrancesco. He was a graduate of Clairton High School, then attained his Bachelor's degree in accounting from Duquesne University. He was a Korean War veteran, stationed in Germany in the US Army's 2nd Armored Division. As a young man, he and his brothers owned and operated Milas Brothers Beer Distributor in Clairton, then went on to work with the US Treasury Department until his retirement. Throughout his life, Steve was an avid golfer and sports fan. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Norma (DiFrancesco) Milas; his sisters-in-law, Anna Milas, Thelma Bartolini, Rose Sakas, and Linda DiFrancesco; Steve is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. DOTY ALBERT J. Age 97, of New Eagle, died Sunday, August 19, 2018. He was born August 8, 1921 in New Eagle, the son of Joseph and Susie Valiani Doty. Mr. Doty was a US Army veteran during World War II having served in Italy and Africa. He retired in 1981 after 40 and a half years of employment with Conrail, working in Shire Oaks, Altoona, Johnstown and Bedford, Ohio. During his years working with Conrail, he volunteered his time at several western Pennsylvania area hospitals, where he was instrumental in showing movies at Christmas time to the children. BOWERS REV. DR. LeROY W. On August 17, the Rev. Dr. LeRoy W. Bowers transitioned to life in the bosom of God. He graduated from Orange (NJ) HS in 1939 and from Johnson C. Smith University with a B.S. degree in 1943. He attended Union Theological Seminary, (NYC) from 1943-1944 and graduated from Virginia Union University Seminary in 1946 with a B. Div. degree. He was Ordained to ministry in the Presbyterian Church in 1948. He was accepted to University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and graduated in 1951, the only African American member of his class. The weekend of his graduation, he married Jean Farrish. At Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh, he completed an internship and residency in General Surgery. Dr. Bowers and his wife were commissioned as missionaries of the Presbyterian Church in 1957. They sailed with three small children from New York in the winter of 1958 and arrived at their mission post in Hamadan, Iran, where he and his growing family served until 1965. He was a general surgeon and delivered many babies in the busy Mission Hospital there. Dr. Bowers was then recruited to Tyrone, PA, where he became a much-loved and very busy physician. He served this rural community until his retirement. He was active in and served as President of the Blair County Medical Society. During his years of practice in Tyrone, he maintained his appointment and ordination with the Presbyterian Church and filled the role of pulpit supply throughout the Huntington Presbytery. He and Jean moved to Pittsburgh in 1994 to be closer to their grandchildren, and in 2004, they became active residents of Sewickley, often attending musical and sporting events of their grandchildren, and growing a wonderful group of friends. They were active members of The Community of Reconciliation Church in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Rev. Dr. Bowers lived his final eight years under the loving care provided at Villa St Joseph in Baden, PA. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 15, at 10:00 a.m. at Community of Reconciliation Church, 100 N. Bellfield Ave., Pgh., PA 15213. JOHNSON PAUL STEVEN Of Pittsburgh, died Friday, August 10, 2018, on his 60th birthday, following a battle with lung cancer. He was born in Pittsburgh on August 10, 1958, son of the late Edwin Wallace and Bonnie Jean Lisle Johnson of Murrysville. Paul grew up in Murrysville and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Franklin Regional High School in 1976, where he competed on the varsity swim team. Following his freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University, his studies were interrupted by what became a life-long struggle with schizophrenia. After diagnosis and treatment, he resumed his studies at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating with a B.S. in Information Science in 1988. SAWHILL WILLA ELIZABETH (McLEAN) Born on April 22, 1917 in Northwestern PA. Her family moved to Oakdale, where she grew up. In 1937, she married John Jay Sawhill of Midway, and together they moved to Imperial, where they began their new family. Jay's career took them to California, Oklahoma, and eventually Houston, Texas, where Willa remained until 2006, when she came full circle and returned to Imperial to live with her children until her passing. Wherever they went, Jay and Willa were known for extraordinary hospitality, hosting countless dinners, parties, and holiday celebrations where all were welcomed. They made many friends, with many of whom Willa kept up as long as connection was possible. She was known for never forgetting a birthday or anniversary.
