WILLIAM "BILL" LEY Age 94, died peacefully on Monday, May 4, at Mt. Assisi Place in Ross Township, formerly of West View. Bill was a member of the first graduating class of North Catholic High School. Prior to entering the corporate world, he was in the Air Force from 1944-1946 earning the rank of Sergeant. Bill then worked for 41 years as a Draftsman for Pittsburgh- Des Moines Steel Corporation. During his time there, he was an avid bowler on the company bowling team. He enjoyed his time in retirement by watching any sporting event he could, doing any crossword puzzle that came his way, and enjoying his grandchildren with chipped ham sandwiches on Mancini's, with a Pepsi. Survivors include three sons, William Jr. (Mary Jo), Dennis, joseph (Cheryl); two daughters, Janet Bower and Susan Sauers, all from Pittsburgh; 12 grandchildren, Julie (Kevin), Jason (Mary), William III, Brett, Jaime, Tara, Adam, Samantha, Michael, Jeffrey, Brianne (John), and Olivia; and nine great-grandchildren with one more on the way. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Jeanne, who he missed dearly since her passing in 1995 and their oldest daughter, Jeanne in 2010. BRIAN DAVID STEINBERG Age 58, of Huntington and Pittsburgh, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020, in Pittsburgh. He was born May 30, 1961, in Huntington, a son of the late Marcia L. Saltz and Jack B. Steinberg. He is survived by two sons, Matthew Steinberg and Benjamin Steinberg, both from Pittsburgh; four brothers, Mark Steinberg (Andrea), Adam Steinberg (Tracy), Paul Jacobson (Lisa) and the late Marc Jacobson; three nieces, Ashley Steinberg, Alexandra Steinberg and Sydney Jacobson; four nephews, Joshua Steinberg, Matthew Steinberg, Zachary Steinberg and Morgan Jacobson; a great-nephew, Myron Thompson; a great-niece, Ariana Roos; and his loving partner, Emilia Phetteplace. Brian had a long career as a retail management consultant and worked for numerous tier-one retail organizations including Bed Bath & Beyond and American Eagle. He has been consulting for Rue 21 since July 2018. Brian loved to grill in the summers, travel with Emilia — one of their recent trips included a vacation in Aruba — and go out to dinner with Emilia and his children. JOHN B. MALLON, III John was born in Pittsburgh, PA, graduated from North Allegheny High School Class of 1993 and attended IUP Culinary Institute. John had a passion for cooking and worked at several North Hills restaurants, along with being employed by Giant Eagle and Radon Detection and Control. John died unexpectedly at his residence in Wexford, PA, May 2, 2020. John was disabled and as a result was a resident of Manor Care North Hills for four years. He was also active and involved with numerous disability advocacy groups which assisted various charities. He is survived by his parents, Cynthia and James Bennett, John and Pamela Mallon; his partner, April Anderson; his siblings, Erik Bennett, Faith Veon (David), Steven Bennett, Robert Mallon (Larissa) Aaron Ratz (Adela); and seven nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. There will be no open Visitation nor Memorial Service at this time due to ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic restrictions. RICHARD D. "DICKIE" ACKMAN Richard "Dickie" Ackman, 74, of Oakdale, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2020, in St. Clair Hospital, surrounded by his family. Dickie was born on January 2, 1946, the son of the late Howard and Ruth “Tippy” (Jones) Ackman. Mr. Ackman was a lifelong truck driver and skilled mechanic, and owner of D.ALI Trucking. Dickie was a part of the Sil's coffee crew, where he enjoyed spending time with all his friends. He will best be remembered for his enormous heart and how he selflessly would help his Oakdale and surrounding communities, especially during the flood of 2004. Dickie gave his time and equipment to those who needed him most, whenever they needed him. He was a mentor to many and never passed up on a greasy spoon, junkyard or ice cream. Surviving is his loving wife, Janet (Walker) Ackman of Oakdale; daughter, Lori Ann Miller of North Fayette Twp.; sister, Barb Ackman of Texas; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. WILLIAM A. DUNN SR. Age 88, of Moon Twp., passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2020, in Good Samaritan Hospice House in Wexford. He was born in Sheridan, PA on February 16, 1932, the son of the late Arthur (Gladys) Dunn and Isabel Mary (Keck) Dunn, whom passed away when he was young. He was a retired accounting clerk for J&L Steel. He was a semi-pro pitcher for Pirates Farm Team and he once struck out Rudy York. He was also a championship Dart Ball Player for the Pittsburgh Church Dart Ball Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters, Mary Jane, Dot, and Lois, as well as his former wife, Mary. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Dr. William A. Dunn Jr. (Dr. Constance Uphold), Gainesville, FL; Deborah A. Dunn (Gerard Geist) Lancaster, PA; and Raymond C. (Mary Theresa) Dunn, Pittsburgh; four grandchildren, Lindsay (Adam) Rich, Nicholas, Derrick, and Christina Dunn; two step-grandchildren, Lisa (Lawrence) Pope and Denise (David) Kane; three step-great-grandchildren, Katie (Daniel) Limbacher, Emily Pope and Trevor Kane. ELIZABETH ANN "BETTY" MORRISON Age 94, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020, at her home in Ashburn, VA. She waged a valiant battle against advancing age and declining health. She was a longtime resident of the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County and an active member at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She was born in Monaca, PA on February 9, 1926, and graduated from Monaca High School in 1944. She went to the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA as a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps, a program initiated during WWII. She graduated in September 1947, became a Registered Nurse and worked at Mercy Hospital. She married James F. Morrison on September 6, 1948. Betty followed him for his job and eventually settled in Alexandria, VA in 1967. She resumed her nursing career at Alexandria Hospital in 1968 where she worked for 20-plus years until she retired. During these years she fought and survived breast cancer. Betty lived for travel and always had a bag packed, ready to depart for the next adventure. She eventually saw much of the world - Asia, Iran, former Soviet Bloc countries, Egypt, Israel, Argentina and nearly all of Europe. But always, closest to her heart, was Ireland - anywhere in Ireland. She was a volunteer at George Washington's Mount Vernon and loved zipping around in her 280Z, always on the go. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim; her parents, Steven and Bertha Schupay; her brother, Jack; and sister, Charlotte. Betty is survived by her brother, Steven J. Schupay of Beaver Falls, PA; sister, Judy Measel of Hudson, Ohio; daughters, Chris LaMarca of McLean, VA and Patrice Martin of Charlottesville, VA; her son, James F. Morrison, Jr. of Eager, AZ; and grandchildren, Olivia, Shaune, Vanessa, Stephen and Donna. A Funeral Mass will be held at a later date followed by inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery. ROBERT THOMAS "TOM" DRESSLER Age 84, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away April 30, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Margaret Dressler, his first wife, Mattie Saul Dressler, to whom he was married for 47 years, and his second wife, Gloria, only six hours before him. Tom was born in Hinton, WV and raised in East Bank, WV, where he graduated from East Bank High School before moving on to earn his degree in Electrical Engineering at West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he held the distinction of being the first graduate from their EE program to graduate with the highest honors the Institute could bestow. Tom and Mattie moved to Pittsburgh, PA upon his graduation and Tom would work for Westinghouse for the next 41 years. He was well known in the nuclear power generation field and instrumental in the refueling of the USS Enterprise and other military warships. He also participated in early investigation of both hydroelectric and solar power. As a young Junior Engineer, his first assignment was to wire the Control Panels of the US's first nuclear power plant in Shippingport, PA. Tom's grandchildren would say "He was never far from his mechanical pencil." Tom enjoyed the fellowship of several Baptist and Methodist churches during the course of his life, where he lent his rich baritone voice to choirs, quartets, as a soloist and in church holiday pageants. He was also known to pull his trumpet out occasionally, which he had played in the High School Marching Band, to accompany the organist during Sunday worship services. As his surviving sister-in-law, Agnes Saul Wooters would say, “He was a good Christian man who was loyal to his faith.” Tom also had a competitive side and was quite active in a number of sports, including softball, golf, tennis, horseshoes and could play a mean game of badminton! Tom's survivors include his daughter, Judi Daniels of Atlanta, GA; his son, Jeff Dressler and his wife, Judy Dressler of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren, Rob Daniels, Becky Daniels Morgan, Reanna Daniels Shirley, Sarah Dressler Rothermel, Chuck Dressler, Ben Dressler; and 17 wonderful great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Janet Dressler Davis, who lives in the state of Washington, and Gwen Dressler Woody, who lives in Falls Church, VA. Tom is now dancing with Mattie in heaven, at least they will be once she has the opportunity to straighten a few things out with him! They are both loved and missed! ROBERT J. BOGGS Robert J. Boggs, age 86, of Ross Twp., formerly of Freedom, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020. He was the son of the late Herbert and Fern Mae Maloy Boggs. Bob was the owner and founder of Economy Electric Supply in Ambridge, a business he ran for 40 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Husband of the late Barbara Lee Williams Boggs, who he married on May 5, 1962 and who died on March 30, 2017. Also preceded in death by his brothers, John and Donald Bogg; his sisters, Eudora Caputo and Sara Hopf; a half-brother, George Robinson; and a half-sister, Jean Majors. Surviving are a brother, Clarence Boggs of Ironton, Ohio and a sister, Sue Butor of Pgh., and many nieces and nephews. ADELENE "SIS" M. (PETRONE) KRUPPA Age 93, a longtime resident of Crescent, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2020, at West Hills Health and Rehab. She was born in Pittsburgh on January 19, 1927, one of four to the late Frank and Julia (Visco) Petrone. Adelene was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kruppa, and her three brothers, State Representative Thomas Petrone, Francis Petrone, and James Petrone. She is the beloved and cherished mother of Frank J. Randazza of Moon Township, her sister-in-law, Marlene Petrone of Bloomfield; and her niece Christa Petrone of Phoenix, AZ. Adelene was a member of St. Catherine of Siena where she served as Eucharistic Minister. She also was a member of Crescent Township Civic Club and the Pittsburgh Jazz Society. For over 30+ years she was a Registered Nurse at Homestead Industries. Her post retirement job was working the register at the Crescent Citco. Adelene was fun and a joy to be around. She loved music, loved to dance, was bubbly, loved by all and enjoyed helping others. Because of COVID-19, there will be no visitation and Mass will be private. NANCY A. KRUPA Age 77, of Monroeville; formerly of East McKeesport and Corry, PA, passed away May 2, 2020, after a nine year battle of mental and physical decline due to Alzheimer's disease. Born March 28, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Gladys Krupa. Nancy and her husband, Eugene “Red” Haynes, owned and worked at their company, Kory Builders, as general contractors for 27 years. Initially, Nancy physically worked alongside her husband on the jobs; but as the company grew, she worked in the office managing the company's operations and overseeing the jobs. During that time, Nancy was an active member of the East Allegheny Business Association and also on the board. Nancy was a strong, independent woman who enjoyed working in the man's world of construction. Nancy and Red also enjoyed traveling across the country on their motorcycles and were married for 33 years until Red's death in 2006. Prior to her marriage, Nancy earned a doctorate from Carnegie Tech in 1971 and was a home economics teacher. She was an avid dog lover and especially loved her many Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Over the years, she bred and proudly showed her dogs throughout the Tri-State area. She enjoyed entering her Ridgebacks in lure coursing competitions, placing 1st and coming home with many ribbons and prizes. Nancy was a member and former officer of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States. She also enjoyed gardening and had the most colorful container flower garden in the neighborhood. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Linda Krupa. She is survived by friends and cousins. A heartfelt thank you to Nancy's caregivers, nurses and staff over the past nine years; and more recently, to the entire hospice staff who also provided her care over the last year and a half. EDELTRAUT "EDDY" ANGELIKA MARKIEWICZ Edeltraut “Eddy” Angelika Markiewicz, 70, of McCandless Township, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2020. She was born on March 6, 1950, daughter of the late Hans and Irmgard (Lindner) Gaertner. Eddy was a loving wife, self-less mother and nurturing grandmother. She loved cross-stitching, enjoyed various crafts and loved spending time with family. While illness may have diminished Eddy physically, the difference she made in lives of others will continue to be felt eternally. PHILIP STEWART SLAUGH Philip Stewart Slaugh, passed away on May 1, 2020, age 88, son of the late William Edward and Pearl Schiffer Slaugh, brother of the late Lawrence Andrew Slaugh. Survived by wife Carolyn Ferguson Slaugh and son Donald William Slaugh. Philip was a graduate of what is now Carnegie Mellon University with three degrees in music and education. A retired music teacher with the West Mifflin Area School District, he was a member and past president of the Pittsburgh Musicians Union. Phil played string bass with the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Ballet Orchestra, and many church and community concerts, especially the McKeesport Symphony. GEORGE TOMASIC Age 89, of Point Breeze, peacefully passed away on the morning of Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at UPMC Passavant. He is survived by his grandson, David George Esaias, his dear sister, Mary Kerlin, and many nieces/nephews. Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, June E. Tomasic, loving daughter, Sandra June Esaias, and brother, Nicholas “Mike” Tomasic, Sr. George was raised in North Braddock, speaking only Croatian until attending elementary school as a first-generation American and graduated Scott High School in 1948. He began working in the open hearth as a young man before enlisting in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean War, before becoming a custom home builder and successful business owner of numerous businesses including Totum Lumber, Finleyville Planning Mill, Leggett Kitchens, a travel agency and others. A private viewing and service will be held at McCABE BROS., INC. FUNERAL HOME followed by interment at Homewood Cemetery.
